I'm currently planning a trip abroad and wanted to share some thoughts (and get your feedback) regarding data connectivity for DIY setups while traveling.
When using systems like AAPS, Trio, or Loop connected to Nightscout, keeping continuous data connectivity is critical—not just for uploading logs, but especially for remote monitoring (followers/caregivers, Dexcom Share/Follow fallback, or Nightscout alerts when away from hotel Wi-Fi).
In the past, relying on local physical SIM cards meant swapping cards at the airport, dealing with activation delays, or losing access to your primary phone number for two-factor authentication (2FA). High roaming fees from home carriers are also a pain.
For recent trips, switching to a travel data plan via esimplanet (https://esimplanet.io/) made things much smoother: Instant activation upon landing (no downtime for Nightscout syncing). Keeping the primary SIM active for essential calls/2FA while using the eSIM strictly for data. Stable connection to avoid gaps in CGM remote monitoring and cloud backups.
How do you all manage your data connectivity and follower setups when traveling internationally? Do you stick to offline-only looping, local physical SIMs, or dedicated travel eSIM profiles?
